Santa Monica Looks to 'Real Time' Beach Parking Signs to Relieve Traffic

The signs are the first step toward putting together a real-time congestion management system in downtown Santa Monica.

Looking for a parking spot in the summer around Santa Monica Beach can be a nightmare. The city of Santa Monica is looking to relieve that stress with real time parking and travel information signs.

The signs would be placed on roadways leading to Santa Monica beach parking lots adjacent to the Pier, on Ocean Avenue and Palisades Beach Road.

"Signs placed near the Santa Monica Freeway off-ramps would also display parking information for garages in the downtown area," according to a city staff report.

The design of the signs will go before the Santa Monica City Council next week. The council is being asked whether to direct staff to purchase the signs and publish a Notice Inviting Bids for a construction contract.

The budget for the signs is $1.165 million. The city received a $533,000 grant from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. An additional $346,500 of State ITS funds were secured for the project as well, according to city staff.

The California Coastal Commission approved a permit for the signs in June.
