Santa Monica Makes Sure Everyone Can Have a Day at the Beach

The city recently built a universally accessible playground and a second one is under construction.

Santa Monica, CA — On a hot day, going to the beach sounds like heaven, and the city of Santa Monica wants everyone to have a slice of heaven.

For some, a day in the sand would be difficult if weren't for the free beach wheelchairs the city makes available or the pave paths to the water.

"We have an inherent duty to make our beaches accessible to all, because of their beauty,” Recreation and Parks Commission member Kurt Schwengel told the Santa Monica Daily Press.

The city has several paved paths for people with with mobility issues and recently increased accessibility with the opening of a universally accessible playground. A second is currently under construction.
