Emotional Time for Artists as Major Center Closes
After 12 years, the Valley's biggest art center is shutting its doors. Neighbors in Sherman Oaks complained about zoning issues.
The Valley Institute of Visual Art, which is closing its doors this week, has been serving thousands of artists as a gallery and collective for more than a decade. It's been a place where people could develop their talents, share their skills and sell their art.
VIVA's location on Moorpark Street attracted large crowds, but some people who lived in this residential neighborhood complained to the city that the center was not appropriate for the high-density area. Neighbors claimed there was not ample parking for a venue that would draw so many visitors. Even with support from the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council and members of the City Council who represent the district, the Department of Building and Safety insisted that VIVA's role as a community center clashed with the zoning regulations that apply to its location.
With its site closing, the nonprofit center is hoping to find a new location. Earlier this month, VIVA held its final exhibition of paintings and sculpture. It was an emotional day for everyone involved. See the accompanying video.
