Congresswoman Hahn Calls on CBP to Rethink Slashing of Overtime at Local Ports

Over 11 billion dollars of goods come through the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports everyday.

Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44), who represents both South Gate and Lynwood, has sent a letter to David Aguilar, the Deputy Commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), to inform him of her concern over his agency’s decision to slash overtime work hours for personnel as a result of sequestration.

Hahn believes that this decision will potentially disrupt the flow of goods at two influential ports. Affecting not only the local economy but also the national.

“The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are the economic engine of our nation’s economy,” said Hahn in a statement. “By eliminating overtime hours, CBP will be unable to ensure the safe and efficient flow of goods.”

The interruptions will lead to increase costs which will in turn weaken the economy, said Hahn.

Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) also joined Hahn in the crafting of the letter.

“I empathize with the CBP’s decision to cease overtime work for personnel due to sequestration cuts, but that decision could have harmful impacts on our nation’s economy and global competitiveness,” warned Lowenthal in a statement.

Everyday, over one billion dollars worth of goods come through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. This means that approximately 40% of all cargo entering the United States makes use of these ports.
