Lynwood Council Votes to reinstate July 4th Celebration

On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, the Lynwood City Council voted unanimously in favor reinstating the annual 4^th of July celebration and fireworks show, in partnership with the new Greater Lynwood Chamber of Commerce (GLCC), with some conditions.The event was canceled last year and prior due to budget cuts.

Among the conditions set by the City Council, is that the GLCC work together with Lynwood’s Recreation and Community Services Department to raise funds and sponsorships to cover the costs of the event.

“Chambers of Commerce from other cities carry events like this through sponsorships and donations,” said Edwin Hernandez, Lynwood City Treasurer and head of the GLCC. “That’s how we were able to host our Christmas Parade, through sponsorships. I believe we can make it happen again.”

The cost associated with this year’s 4^th of July celebration are estimated to stand at around $36,750. The event will include a fireworks display, professional carnival, vendor booths, as well as entertainment.

The city of Lynwood may have to cover some of the costs, but not the full $36,750.

“City Council Members approved the 4^th of July Celebration and GLCC partnership with the understanding that it may have to borne some costs if sponsorships do not come through between now and June 15,” said Marisela Santana, the city of Lynwood’s public information officer, in statement.
