Lynwood Honors Women for Making a 'Difference'

On Friday, March 29, a dozen women were recognized as, “Women Who Make a Difference,” by local dignitaries in Lynwood’s Bateman Hall’s Grand Auditorium. The women were chosen by a panel of four judges, who read through the 500 nomination essays authored by students of the Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD).

In the essays, students from grades 1 to 12 spoke about a woman that inspired them. The judges picked a winner  from each of the participating grades.

First Lady Michelle Obama and best-selling novelist Erin Pizzey, were two of the women chosen from the essays. The remaining ten were picked from essays that spoke on women from the actual lives of the students.

The names of these ten were the following:

Guadalupe Valderas

Ramona Arevalo

Veronica Hurtado

Alma Irene

Juicho Leon

Araceli De La Cruz

Marisol Calderon de Lopez

Cindy Bernal

Maria Carmen Perez

Josefina Agatep

Among the winners, Ramona Arevalo was awarded a grand prize, which included tickets to see the Los Angeles Dodgers, among other things.

The event was also attended by several elected representatives. These included Congresswoman Janice Hahn (D-44th District), as well as State Assemblymen Anthony Rendon (D-63^rd District) and Isadore Hall III (D-64^th District).

Lynwood councilmembers Aide Castro, Maria Santillan Beas, Jim Morton and Mayor Sal Alatorre also attended the event.
