Lynwood Unified Superintendent Announces Retirement

Edward Velasquez, the current Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD) superintendent, announced his plans to retire on June 30, 2013. Deputy Superintendent Paul Gothold has been voted by the board of education to replace Velasquez.

“We believe this transition will be seamless and our students will reap the benefits of continuity in style and success,” said Maria G. Lopez, president of the LUSD school board, in a statement. 

According to an LUSD press release, Velasquez’s tenure was marked by several highlights.

“Academic Performance Index (API) scores have vastly improved, more Lynwood students are graduating from Lynwood’s high schools, and the District’s finances have stabilized,” stated an LUSD statement.

Velasquez expressed pride for the district’s work and support for his successor.

“I am so proud of the successes we have been able to achieve,” said Velasquez in statement. “As I move on, there is no question that Mr. Gothold, who has been doing a phenomenal job as the District’s instructional leader, will continue to propel Lynwood Unified to achieving greatness.”

Gothold began working with the LUSD in July 2010 and has worked for more than 18 years in public education.

“I have been fortunate to be part of a very hardworking team that has given heart and soul,” Gothold said in statement. “I am humbled by the Board’s decision to appoint me to the superintendent post."
