Letter to the Editor: Why I'm Not Running for City Council

Councilman David Sifuentes explains his accomplishments while in office.

Many friends and supporters have asked me why I’m not running again. I respond by telling them this:

I have accomplished what I set out to do when I ran for City council over four years ago. My campaign platform was simple; put public safety back as a City priority, address our infrastructure needs and promote good health in our town.

Public Safety: Five years ago, our very own police and fire departments were at the cusp of being contracted out to a larger agency. As an officer for the Los Angeles Fire Department, I understood how vital it was for us to maintain the quality of service that we have been accustomed to. Today through transparency and due respect, our public employee organizations continue to provide the quality service that our residents deserve serving with pride and integrity.

Infrastructure: Our infrastructure had been neglected for decades resulting in a dilapidated sewer system and streets. For the past four years, we have allocated more fiscal commitments towards needed repairs and service to our infrastructure than ever before. The user utility tax has helped tremendously in meeting some of our city needs as well.

Health: With the support from my colleagues, I was successful in championing a “non-smoking ordinance” that prohibits smoking in all public parks, outside eateries, and now multistory apartment complexes. I have also been able to spearhead a city-wide bike plan, which will promote safe riding for all cyclists. The plan is designed to link schools, parks and our prestigious library together. The implementation is expected to start by the end of the summer.

When I was Mayor—for the first time in the history of the freeway fight—we had a bill on the Governor’s desk that was a signature away from eliminating the possibility of a surface route; but it was vetoed. We continue to seek legislative support in a similar bill that is currently at the State Capital.

At the end of the day, I still have a career and other outside interests.  I’m ready to concentrate on other areas. Recently, I was asked to lead and become a California Chapter President for a National nonprofit Organization; I have accepted and will begin that task at the end of my council term.

Also, I’m considering to prepare for an upcoming promotion at work.  And lastly, I have over four years worth of unattended projects at home that I’m ready to take on.

It has been an extreme privilege to serve as a Mayor and Councilmember for the great city of South Pasadena.  I will remain active in our community and will continue to support our new council.

Sincerely,

David Sifuentes
