South Pas No Longer Split in Latest Voting Proposal

The newest Assembly District drawing South Pas with Pasadena, Monrovia, Rancho Cucamonga and the San Gabriel Mountains.

Rather than splitting the City in two, the has grouped all of South Pas with its neighbors to the North and East in its latest visualization of proposed Assembly Districts.

South Pas Council member Philip Putnam and others from San Gabriel Valley (released June 10) at a redistricting meeting in Whittier last month.

John Furman, a Pasadena resident, submitted a petition at the meeting of more than 70 signatures to keep cities of South Pasadena, Altadena and Pasadena united in one district.

“South Pasadena should not be split between two Assembly districts,” he said. “Keep our cities united.”

The newest Assembly District visualization above groups South Pas with Pasadena, Sierre Madre and Monrovia; it stretches north to the San Gabriel Mountains and east to Rancho Cucamonga.

"It's hard to see how cities like South Pasadena, Upland and Duarte constitute a 'community of interest,'" said South Pas resident Alex Maltun after viewing the latest conceptual drawing. "Many residents of San Marino and Arcadia may still be upset, as those cities remain separated from Pasadena in the new proposal."

Regardless, the new map does not split South Pas in two, which was a main concern when the initial plans were released. Residents throughout South Pas felt the original Assembly and Congressional District drawings marginalized the city and hurt its fight against the 710 Freeway.

Whether the commission adopts a district that looks more like the latest proposal, the June 10 proposal or something else entirely is still up in the air. The  have already passed, but residents can still submit an official comment on the proposals online. The final districts will be released in August.
