South Pas Students Excel at Math Field Day

Check out who earned the top prize from the county, as well as a list of all the winners from the academic event.

South Pasadena elementary and middle school students raked up the awards at the 28th Los Angeles County Math Field Day. 

The boys and girls joined some 350 students who represented school districts from throughout the county. The competition was held at Wilson Middle School in Glendale on April 27. 

Here are the winners, and what they won, according to the South Pasadena Unified School District website

South Pasadena Middle School eighth graders Matt Arena, Anthony Chen, Jaehyung Choi and Grace Kull captured the 1stPlace trophy for the top team in the county.  They swept to victory by scoring gold in all three categories -- procedural skills, problem solving and conceptual understanding.

Seventh graders Bethany Chen, Daniel Chun, Caroline Liu, and Stephen Ren placed second in the county, earning the gold medal for conceptual understanding, the silver in problem solving, and the bronze in procedural skills.

Sixth graders Caroline Choi, Kai Dettman, Lauren Kafkaloff, and Kevin Xu were awarded the silver medal for procedural skills.

Fifth graders Ian McLane, Alan Quan, Preston Sharkey, and Corey Segal captured the silver medal in conceptual understanding.

Fourth graders Sarah Chen, Jolene Lee, Russell Thomas, and Madeleine Yoo worked hard and proudly represented the school district.

The students were coached by teachers Dawn Tull and Doug Buhler.  Parents Steven Chen, Debbie Arena, David Choi and Cizao Ren assisted in conducting the math field day.
