SPUSD Considers Development of District Parking Lot

The goal of the development is to generate revenue for the district while adding value to the community.

received three RFPs in July for development of the parking lot connected to the district's administrative office on El Centro, Superintendent Joel Shapiro confirmed with Patch Thursday.

Eric Hall, the consultant working on the project, will be presenting his recommendations to the school board in coming months. Either the district will move forward with one of the RFPs currently on the table or it will seek additional proposals, Shapiro said.

Shapiro will also be appointing a committee of stakeholders in the community to review the RFPs.

Currently, the parking lot is underutilized, according to the district. In addition to staff and visitors parking in the lot, it is also rented out about 50 days a year to film crews shooting in the area.

The goal of the development is to generate revenue for the district while adding value to the community, Shapiro said. RFPs on the table include commercial, residential and recreational use buildings. Although the actual district building was available to be considered for development, none of the RFPs included it in its plans.
