Why are Crosswalks Being Dug Up on Fair Oaks?

City staff said this method made it easier for the contractor to remove the brick and asphalt.

Why were the brick crosswalks on Fair Oaks covered over with asphalt and now being dug up?

According to Public Works Project Manager Gabriel B. Nevarez, the construction contract states bricks in the crosswalks must be removed in order to install the concrete crosswalks.

Nevarez says:

"There are reasons why the contractor chose to pave over the bricks before removal that benefit both the City and the Contractor. The pavement is laid in a fluid motion through the intersections in order to have a smooth transition through the intersection; otherwise the machine would have had to stop at each crosswalk causing the following:

1. Delays 
2. Rough transition through the intersection (bumpy ride) 
3. It would have looked astatically unpleasant for the Fourth of July festivities

This method made it easier for the contractor to remove the brick/asphalt, and replace it with concrete to match the newly installed asphalt."
