While many Bay Area travelers braved the busiest day at airportsΒ at the start of the Thanksgiving holiday last week, three Bay Area airportsΒ are expected to stay bustling through the end of the weekend.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
The start of the holiday season kicked off with more than 130,000Β passengers arriving and departing from San Francisco International AirportΒ Friday, according to airport officials.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
That day is expected to be the busiest until the holiday travelΒ period ends, but constant, larger-than-usual crowds should be expected untilΒ Sunday, airport duty manager Joe Walsh said.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Today, 63,000 passengers are expected to arrive and about as manyΒ are expected to depart from SFO, making it one of the "heavier" travel daysΒ this week, Walsh said.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
An estimated 1.2 million travelers will pass through SFO betweenΒ Nov. 22Β andΒ Sunday, however those loads will be spread out, Walsh said.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Complicating travel plans is a storm in the Northeast, which mayΒ affect airports in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, and othersΒ beginning today, Walsh said.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Some weather-related delays and flight cancellations would likelyΒ make it to Bay Area airports, Walsh said.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
At Oakland International Airport, spokesman Scott Wintner isΒ warning seasoned travelers to expect "a lot more occasional travelers" whoΒ are not familiar with airport procedures and who may be toting strollers,Β diaper bags and other items that slow them down.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
"It tends to clog things up a little bit more," Wintner said.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
The airport is offering free parking to passengers departingΒ between Thanksgiving Day andΒ Dec. 19.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Up to three days of free parking is being offered for thoseΒ traveling between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. This is the fourthΒ year the parking program has been offered.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
There are more than 7,000 parking spaces available at the airportΒ and the promotion is worth $66.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Travelers coming and going through Mineta San Jose InternationalΒ Airport are expected to be accompanied by an increase in fellow passengers.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Compared to the same 12-day period betweenΒ Nov. 22 and Dec. 3Β lastΒ year, the airport anticipates a 5 percent increase in passenger traffic.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Airport officials said traveling at the airport may be slow-goingΒ with longer lines.
Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β
Officials advise arriving 90 minutes before domestic flights areΒ set to depart and two hours early for international flights.
