SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA β South San Francisco's Community Learning Center is being renamed to honor a former high school history teacher who also served the community as mayor and as a state assemblyman.
The South San Francisco Unified School District's Board of Trustees voted unanimously to rename the facility at 520 Tamarack Lane in remembrance of Gene Mullin.

City leaders are moving forward with the process of identifying a location to place a sign with the facility's new name.
"Gene was not only a part of our school district, but he was an important part of our city," said board clerk Patricia Murray. "I think that it's a wonderful tribute, and I'm proud of our board for passing it."

The renaming proposal was the subject of four previous public meetings, including a citizens advisory committee discussion Oct. 20, according to Valerie Sommer, director of the South San Francisco Public Library. Sommer first brought the proposal for renaming to the school board in July.
"We all miss Gene," Sommer said. "He was a great support within the schools for his students, for the library, for the city, and I really am so proud of this legacy going on a joint school district-city facility that does so much for the students in the district."
