4th Of July Fireworks Caused Hazardous Air In Studio City

Air quality in Studio City after the 4th of July was the worst since September's Bobcat Fire, according to a new report.

Levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were still slightly lower than last year's historic highs, when scores of Angelenos hit the streets with illegal fireworks while official ceremonies were cancelled due to the pandemic.

STUDIO CITY, CA โ€” If you noticed the steep decline in air quality after the 4th of July fireworks, you aren't alone. The South Coast Air Quality Management District announced Tuesday that air pollution levels in Studio City were the worst they've been since the Bobcat Fire in September 2020.

Levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were still slightly lower than last year's historic highs, when scores of Angelenos hit the streets with illegal fireworks while official ceremonies were cancelled due to the pandemic.

"Fireworks are known to emit high levels of PM2.5 and PM10 as well as metal air pollutants, all of which can contribute to negative health effects," AQMD said. "Breathing high levels of fine particulate matter can lead to a wide variety of cardiovascular and respiratory health effects such as heart attacks, asthma aggravation, decreased lung function, coughing and difficulty breathing."

The average PM2.5 Basin-Average concentration across the Southland from 9 p.m. on July 4 to 3 p.m. on July 5 was 60 ยต/m^3, down from 70 ยต/m^3 during the same time period in 2020. Air quality in the valleys and inland areas ranged from unhealthy to hazardous levels, with the worst concentration of pollutants recorded in Ontario.

"Air quality on July 4th and July 5th varies each year depending on the amount of emissions from fireworks and weather conditions," AQMD added. "During periods of poor air quality, residents are encouraged to remain indoors with their windows and doors shut and avoid vigorous physical activity. Air conditioning and/or an air purifier can help reduce indoor pollution levels. Residents can check their air quality with the South Coast AQMD app or at www.aqmd.gov."
