
"Lee Daniels' The Butler" edged out a boy-band documentary to maintain the top spot at the North American box office over the long holiday weekend, according to final figures released today.
ย "The Butler" (which stars local resident and Academy Award-winnerย Forest Whitaker)ย collected $20.2 million between Friday and Monday to hold onto first place, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.
That was good enough to edge out the debut of "One Direction: This Is Us," a 3-D documentary about the popular British singing group that earned $18.5 million over the long weekend. (And band member Harry Styles stays in Studio City when he is in town.)ย
ย The comedy "We're the Millers" continued to be a box-office attraction, earning $16.3 million over the four-day stretch and giving it a four-week total of $113.2 million.
ย Disney's animated "Planes" took fourth place with $10.9 million, followed by the surprise hit "Instructions Not Included," which took in $10.4 million to give it the largest-ever Spanish-language opening in North America. Rounding out the top 10 films of the holiday weekend were "Elysium" ($8.4 million); "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" ($7.1 million); "The World's End" ($6.5 million); "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" ($6.2 million); and "Getaway" ($4.5 million).
