117 Degrees In October: RivCo Towns Shatter Records Amid Fall Heatwave

Multiple Riverside County towns have broken high temperature records this week as an excessive heat warning remains in effect in the IE.

SAN JACINTO, CA — A record breaking heat wave has settled into the southland, leaving many towns across Riverside County under "dangerously hot conditions."

On Tuesday, San Jacinto topped 106 degrees, breaking the record for the day of 105 set in 2012. It was 98 in Idyllwild, breaking the record for the day of 93 set in 2020. In Palm Springs, the desert town reached 117, breaking the record for the day of 115 set in 1980. Similarly, a high temperature of 117 in Indio, crushed the record for the day of 111 set in 2020.

The National Weather Service has extended the excessive heat warning through Wednesday and into Thursday in the Coachella Valley and Riverside County desert communities with highs expected to reach 114 degrees.

Dangerously hot conditions, with temperatures between 108 and 114, are in the forecast for La Quinta, Indio, Cathedral City, Borrego Springs, Coachella, Palm Desert, Palm Springs and Palm Desert County.

The low temperatures in those areas will be in the mid 70s to low 90s.

Heat advisories have been issued until 8 p.m. Thursday for Riverside County valley communities, Moreno Valley, Corona, Rancho Cucamonga and Riverside, where temperatures are expected to be between 100 and 108. Lows will be in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Mountain communities can expect temperatures in the mid 80s to the mid 90s until Thursday. Lows will be in mid 60s to mid 70s.

Magenta areas on the map are under Excessive Heat Warnings while orange areas on the map are under Heat Advisories.

Remember, during an extreme heat event, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Heat related illnesses can increase significantly during extreme heat events, so if you are working out of doors, take plenty of breaks and remain hydrated.

Look after your pets, and keep them indoors if possible. Provide plenty of shade and water if they must be outside.
