6-Foot Waves Expected In Venice

VENICE, CA — Big waves are coming to Venice, as the National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement across coastal Los Angeles County through Thursday evening.

The Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday evening. According to officials, residents can expect breaking waves of three to six feet. The National Weather Service warned residents against swimming or surfing in the dangerous conditions.

"Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks," the NWS said in a statement.

The dangerous ocean conditions include an increased risk of drowning due to strong rip currents that can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, officials said. The NWS said the waves may wash people off of beaches and rocks and capsize small boats near the shore.

In addition to hazardous waves, officials said cities may experience minor coastal flooding over beaches around high tide. Zuma Beach parking lot in Marina del Rey may become flooded, the NWS said.

High tides will occur between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. each night, the NWS said.
