Tropical Storm Hilary Watch: Where To Find Sandbags In Venice

VENICE, CA — For the first time since the 1930s, Southern California will be hit by a tropical storm that will bring heavy rains and flood risks to Venice.

The National Weather Service predicted that up to 7 inches of rain will fall and winds will reach up to 50 mph along the coast and 60 mph across mountains.

“To put this into historical perspective, the last time a tropical storm has made landfall in southern California was 1939,” NWS said. “Significant strong wind, flooding, and high surf impacts will be possible from Hilary across our forecast area.”

Venice officials said those living in low-lying areas should prepare accordingly due to the area being prone to flooding. Venice residents were encouraged to prepare sandbags.

Sandbags are available to Venice residents at the following locations:

• Fire Station 110 (4433 Admiralty Way)
• Rose Avenue Lot (300 Ocean Front Walk)
• Venice Avenue Lot (2300 Ocean Front Walk)
• Washington St. Lot (3100 Ocean Walk)

Residents are required to bring their IDs and can pick up a maximum of 10 bags. Those collecting sand were also urged to bring their own shovel or tools. Collecting sand from the beach is illegal.
