Water Main Break Causes Mayhem in Mar Vista
The 3:15 a.m. break sends glass flying, smashes car windows and produces a sinkhole.

Utility crews are repairing water main breaks Thursday in the Mar Vista and Silver Lake areas that have left at least 100 customers without water service.
At 3:15 a.m., a 4-inch main break occurred in the Mar Vista area in the 3900 block of Moore Street, affecting 15 to 20 apartment buildings, said utility spokeswoman Gale Harris.

Officials said flooding has caused a growing sinkhole, according to CBS2. The break also caused debris to fly into the air and smash car windows, NBC reported.
An 8-inch water main break in the 2400 block of Glendale Boulevard occurred at 2:15 a.m., which left 15 to 20 customers without service, Harris said.

It was not immediately known when there would be complete water restoration to the affected areas.
According to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the city’s aging water system suffers more water main breaks when temperatures drop because colder water from the Sierra Nevada range in Northern California enters the water system, causing pipes to contract, as reported by NBC.
