Injured Hiker Rescued From Mount Diablo

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District used a specialized all-terrain utility vehicle Friday to rescue an injured hiker from Mount Diablo.

Firefighters from Con Fire's Station 11 in Clayton were dispatched to the downed hiker shortly before 1:30 p.m. Friday, the agency wrote on social media. An older woman slipped and fell down a trail near Prospector's Gap not far from the mountain's north peak, according to a news report.

Firefighters used the all-terrain utility vehicle —UTV — to rescue the hiker and bring her down off the mountain. By 3 p.m. Friday, the injured woman was in an ambulance and on her way to a local hospital for further care.

"This specialized apparatus is purposely assigned to this station for this very reason," a Con Fire spokesperson said. "This vehicle is used when access is difficult or impossible for our normal 4-wheel drive vehicles in areas such as Mt. Diablo."
