Gold Medalists Amit Elor, Sabrina Ionescu To Appear At Hometown Events

Walnut Creek is lucky to claim two gold medal winners from the Paris Olympics: wrestler Amit Elor and WNBA player Sabrina Ionescu.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — The city of Walnut Creek is holding a special event to celebrate Amit Elor and Sabrina Ionescu, two Walnut Creek natives who won gold medals in the recent Paris Olympics.

Elor won gold in women's freestyle wrestling and Ionescu, a WNBA player, won gold as part of the women's basketball team.

"We invite all residents to join us in applauding her accomplishments at an event in Civic Park on Saturday, September 14, at 1 p.m.," city officials said. "We’ll gather around the gazebo. Bring a blanket to sit on or low-backed chairs."

There will be a question-and-answer session with Elor and two of her coaches. Guests will also have an opportunity to take photos with the gold medalist.

"We’ll have more information in the coming weeks about a celebration for Sabrina, who is busy scoring points for the playoff-bound New York Liberty," the city said.

Ionescu, 26, was born in Walnut Creek and graduated from Miramonte High School in Orinda. The 5-foot-11 inch point guard played college ball for the University of Oregon.

Elor, 20, is also a Walnut Creek native. She graduated from College Park High School. She is 5 feet 7 inches tall and the youngest of six children. (Read more about Elor here.)
