Man Who Was Hit Trying to Run Across I-680 in Walnut Creek Died Last Week
Police say the man and a 54-year-old woman from Grass Valley tried to cross the northbound lanes of Highway 680 when they were struck.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — One of two people who tried to run across Interstate Highway 680 in Walnut Creek last week during the morning commute has died, according to the California Highway Patrol. The man, identified as 36-year-old Danville resident Cardy Harper by the coroner's office, died at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek on Oct. 20. Harper and a 54-year-old woman from Grass Valley tried to cross the northbound lanes of Highway 680 at about 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 18 after they allegedly rear-ended another car near the Ygnacio Valley Road off-ramp, according to police.
After pulling over in the center median, seemingly to exchange insurance information with the people in the car they hit, both Harper and the woman, whose name has not yet been released, jumped the center divide and dashed into the northbound lanes, police said.
They only got past the fast lane before someone driving a maroon Hyundai Sonata hit them, knocking both of them across two lanes of traffic, all the way to the right-hand shoulder, according to CHP spokesman Brandon Correia.

The woman is still at the hospital but her condition has improved. She is conscious and alert and expected to survive, Correia said. Investigators still aren't sure why the pair tried to run across the highway, but will be seeking answers from the woman in the near future, Correia said.
