Northgate Tops Las Lomas In Hard Fought Battle Of The Creek

The sights and sounds from a high energy 31-17 Bronco victory over the Knights

Northgate High scored three second-half touchdowns to defeat Las Lomas High, 31-17, in the 2013 version of the Battle of the Creek.

The Broncos are now 4-0 on the season while the Knights slipped to 2-2.

It was a high energy Friday night football game from the onset.

Crowds filled the seats on both sides of the Northgate High field. Fans lined the fence along the Bronco sideline as well as the fence behind the Las Lomas bleachers.

Northgate's 12th Man club jammed the seats next to the orchestra. They all wore black shirts to match their team's all-black uniforms.

Madison Coswell and Sanoz Talebzasrdeh, both seniors, said the school had a "black out day" on Friday to support the team.

They said their side was pumped up because of the cross-town rivalry.

Do they like Las Lomas?

"Not at all," said Talebzasrdeh.

On the Las Lomas side, senior Sean Cheng and sophomore Colin Borchardt were leading the Knight Knation in cheers.

They were wearing all white to match their team's uniforms.

"This is the biggest game of the year," said Cheng.

"I've been getting pumped all week," added Borchardt.

The game started out well for Las Lomas.

The Knights scored on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead with 9:56 to play in the first quarter.

Northgate kicked a field goal early in the second quarter, but Las Lomas scored again on a long pass play for a 14-3 lead.

Northgate scored their first touchdown late in the second quarter to make the game 14-10 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Northgate intercepted a Las Lomas pass and marched down the field for a go-ahead touchdown and a 17-14 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Las Lomas drove to the Northgate 6-yard line but were stopped there and settled for a field goal to tie the score at 17-17 with 9:23 to play.

Northgate got a good runback on the ensuing kickoff, then marched down the field again for another touchdown, giving them a 24-17 lead with 4:41 left.

Las Lomas was pinned deep in the own territory, then failed on a fourth down and 3 to give Northgate the ball back on the 27-yard line.

The Broncos ran it in for another touchdown with 1:37 left to ice the game.
