📰 News we're reading

• Cashier Shot Over a Matter of Cigarettes in Walnut Creek Bay Area Telegraph (bayareatelegraph.com) — A Walnut Creek gas station employee was shot during an attempted cigarette theft early Sunday, January 4, and police have arrested a 16-year-old suspect while searching for a second. The victim is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, and detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Walnut Creek police or use the anonymous tip line.

• Renowned Bay Area chef indicted for allegedly serving bank robbery with a side of bank robbery (eastbaytimes.com) — A former Walnut Creek restaurateur who once ran Ottavio downtown is now facing new federal charges for an alleged one-day bank robbery spree in San Francisco. Prosecutors say 63-year-old Valentino Luchin robbed or tried to rob three banks, while his attorney cites financial desperation after his restaurant closed and he later declared bankruptcy.

• This ‘criminally overlooked' Burmese restaurant is moving to a larger new home (sfchronicle.com) — Walnut Creek gets a brief shoutout as one of the Bay Area cities courting Oakland’s highly regarded Burmese spot Teni East Kitchen, but the owner chose to stay put and expand nearby on Piedmont Avenue instead. The move will double kitchen space, add outdoor seating, and support an expanded menu and bar program when the new location opens in March.
