Walnut Creek Woman Celebrates 101st Birthday This Weekend

Elly Shaffer has worked at Hamilton Air Force Base and raised five children over the last century and celebrates her 101st year on Saturday.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — A Walnut Creek centenarian will celebrate her 101st birthday Saturday at The Kensington senior living community. Born in 1922, Elly Shaffer moved into The Kensington in 2009, where she quickly became one of the community's most cherished residents.

"Elly radiates vitality and joy, showcasing the spirit of the Kensington," said Kayla Pierce, the community's wellness director. "Her resilience, wisdom, and positivity inspire us all. She's a guiding light, spreading joy throughout our community."

Shaffer's incredible life included time working on the Hamilton Air Force Base in Marin County before becoming a full-time mom to four boys and a girl, who now range in age from 69 to 77. Her days remain full of activities, from Bingo and Friday night dancing to holiday celebrations and iPad games.

She credits her many years to good genes, along with keeping her mind and body in check. She has a few pointers for younger generations, too.

"Staying active has been my secret to a long, healthy life," Shaffer said. "Raised in the countryside with fresh food and five wonderful children, I embraced swimming and staying engaged. Good genes and strong bones certainly played a role — my mother lived to 103. But it's more than that. Don't let things drag you down; prioritize mental as much as physical health. Find the silver lining, gather the pieces and keep moving forward."
