CA New Year Twins Born In Different Years: Photo

The twins made headlines worldwide. One doctor called their birth "one of the most memorable deliveries of my career."

SALINAS, CA — If you took a peek at the birth certificates of newborn twins Aylin and Alfredo Trujillo, you might be thrown off. The Trujillo twins were born 15 minutes apart but in different days, months and years.

Mother Fatima Madrigal of Greenfield in Monterey County delivered Alfredo at 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2021, according to a statement from Natividad Medical Center in Salinas. Aylin entered the world at exactly 12 a.m. Jan. 1, 2022, making her one of the Golden State's first babies of the year.

The chance of twins being born in different years was estimated at one in 2 million, the hospital said.

The twins may be just days old, but they are already famous. They've been featured on the "Today" show and in news publications across the world.

“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” Madrigal said in the statement. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”

Alfredo weighed in at 6 pounds, 1 ounce. Aylin weighed in at 5 pounds, 14 ounces.

They join three siblings — two sisters and a brother. The brother was happy to hear another boy was born into the family, Madrigal said.

"This was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries of my career,” said Dr. Ana Abril Arias of Natividad Medical Group.
