Man Charged After Allegedly Trying To Stab Police With Pole

The Monterey County District Attorney's Office charged Sergio Contreras Villanueva, 34, after he allegedly tried to stab Salinas Police.

SALINAS, CA — A man who allegedly crashed a vehicle into a home and then confronted officers with a spear-like pole before police shot him multiple times on Dec. 29 faces charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon on officers.
The Monterey County District Attorney's office announced Tuesday that Sergio Contreras Villanueva, 34, is charged with felony assault for allegedly trying to stab two Salinas Police Department officers with what appeared to be a pole with sharp-pointed ends that night in December.
After reportedly trying to break into a house three doors down
from where he crashed a car into a home - which caught fire after the wreck - police said Villanueva confronted them with the sharpened pole.
While "confined in a narrow alley" between a house and fence at
about 8:20 p.m. Dec. 29 in Salinas's Laurel Heights Park near N. Madeira Ave, two officers shot six rounds each at Villanueva, striking him multiple times, according to police.
He was taken to a local hospital that night for his injuries.
The district attorney's office said Tuesday that due to Villanueva's injuries, an arraignment has not yet been scheduled.
