Man Sentenced To Prison For Death Of Homeless Monterey Co. Man

The crime occurred in 2015 when Davion Smith collected a drug debt, prosecutors said.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A Salinas man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for causing the death of a homeless man in 2015, Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo announced Friday. Davion Smith was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, battery with serious injury, causing great bodily harm and trying to dissuade a witness from testifying, prosecutors said.

On Aug. 25, 2015, Smith, while collecting a drug debt in the China Town area of Salinas, struck Tyler Webb in the face and caused Webb to fall to the ground and hit his head. Smith eventually died from the incident.

Prosecutors said Smith, while free on bail and awaiting trial, also attempted to dissuade a major witness in the case from testifying by using threats of bodily harm.
