Ramon Velasquez-Torres ID'd As Man Killed Near Watsonville

He was walking on southbound state Highway 1 near Watsonville Monday night when he was struck by a Toyota Prius.

WATSONVILLE, CA — A 28-year-old Salinas man hit and killed by a car while walking on southbound state Highway 1 near Watsonville Monday night has been identified as Ramon Velasquez-Torres, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

A 40-year-old Gilroy man was merging onto the highway south of Mar Monte Avenue in a 2012 Toyota Prius when it struck him at 9:35 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Paramedics responded to the scene and began performing CPR, but Velasquez-Torres died a short time later.

The CHP is still investigating the cause of the collision, but said neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be involved.
