Sheriff's Office IDs 2 Men Killed in Highway 1 Crash Thursday
BREAKING: A Watsonville man and a San Francisco resident died in the collision.
Santa Cruz County sheriff's officials have identified two men killed in a head-on crash on state Highway 1 on Thursday morning. San Francisco resident Guangai Chen, 61, and Watsonville resident Emelio Lopez, 33, were pronounced dead at the scene just south of Swanton Road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Trista Drake.
Chen was driving a Ford Econoline van south at about 60 mph around 7:40 a.m. when he crossed the double yellow lines and crashed into Lopez's Chevrolet Tahoe, which had been traveling north at about the same speed. CHP officers this morning did not have any updates on the condition of two other men in the Tahoe, who were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with severe injuries.
Highway 1 was closed in both directions before reopening around 1 p.m., according to Caltrans.
