Small Fire Forces Big Sur Evacuations Early Monday Morning
Fire officials said they contained the blaze around 3:30 a.m. and expect full containment at some point today.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — A 1.6-acre vegetation fire forced some evacuations in the Big Sur area of unincorporated Monterey County early this morning, according to Cal Fire. The fire, reported at 12:22 a.m. today, was around one mile from state Highway 1 behind the Ventana Big Sur Inn, fire officials said.
According to fire officials, when they arrived at the scene, the fire was difficult to assess. Crews were able to determine that the blaze was burning in steep terrain with heavy fuels but at a slow rate of spread. Fire
crews evacuated a few nearby homes as a precaution.

Cal Fire Capt. John Spooner said the fire is under investigation, but investigators are leaning toward an electrical cause. Nobody was injured.
