Two Killed In Highway 101 Wreck Identified: CHP

BREAKING: The fatal crash was reported Tuesday morning in unincorporated Monterey County.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — The California Highway Patrol has identified two people killed Tuesday morning in a broadside collision on U.S. Highway 101 south of Salinas in unincorporated Monterey County as Natividad Onofre and Julian Rayo. The two were passengers in a Nissan headed north that attempted to make a turn at Spence Road when it was struck by a southbound Toyota around 10 a.m., according to the CHP. Onofre and Rayo were pronounced dead at the scene.

"According to witnesses, the Altima pulled out directly in front of the Toyota, and the Toyota only had a fraction of a second to put on the brakes," CHP Officer Oscar Loza said Tuesday.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision, according to the CHP.
