WATSONVILLE, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Andrea Ortega who nominated Nyelli, 11th Grade, of Watsonville.

How do you know the star local student?

I am her AP/IB Psychology teacher and Club Advisor

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Nyelli is a very well rounded young woman. She is extremely kind to all those around her and always strives to better her own personal growth and enrich the lives of her those around her. She volunteers her time at her local hospital every week, is part of the young voters awareness group, and just started a new club at school while simultaneously working with admin to bring in a new sub cohort in association with Stanford's young women's stem leadership research group. She maintains an excellent CPA and serves on her school's ASB team as well. She is constantly serving others and helping those around her make connections. She is not concerned with popularity, but does all these things out of humility and grace to help those around her.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

She is a quiet leader...full of graceful humility and strong work ethic for the purpose of helping others.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Nyelli!
