New Fee In Watsonville: Here's How Much A Disposable Cup Will Cost You In 2022
Starting this year, people who purchase drinks in disposable cups must pay a fee.

WATSONVILLE, CA — Buy a drink to-go in Watsonville? Beverages served in disposable cups are now subject to a 10-cent fee.

The requirement kicked in Jan. 1 and applies to paper and plastic cups in an effort to reduce litter. Customers may bring a reusable cup to avoid the extra charge.

The fee was established by an ordinance, which states that businesses will keep the 10-cent fee, according to the city's website.
"Discarded single-use plastic products, such as cups, lids, utensils, straws, and clamshells constitute a significant portion of the City’s waste stream," the city said on its website. "This ordinance is a vital component in the City’s efforts and mandates for reducing waste and litter for a cleaner and safer environment for generations to come."

The disposable cup fee ordinance was passed in 2019, but the city waived enforcement of the requirement in March 2020 due to concerns about health and safety.
