After the shooting, the man fled on foot, police said. Authorities set up a perimeter, and SWAT and K-9 officials found the man in the motel with gunshot wounds, according to police, who said paramedics determined he was dead. Orris told City News Service authorities were investigating if the man died because of the officer shooting or if he shot himself.

No one else was injured, according to police, who said Ventura Boulevard was closed from Don Pio Drive to Canoga Avenue after the incident.
