2 Small Wildfires Fires Burning In Rocky Mountain National Park

Beetle-killed lodgepole and spruce fir trees caught fire near Mirror Lake and Trail Ridge Road, the National Park Service said.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, CO – Two small wildfires broke out in Rocky Mountain National Park in remote locations, the National Park Service reported.

One fire was burning near Mirror Lake in the northern section of the park. A second fire is burning in the Forest Canyon area below Trail Ridge Road between Rock Cut and Forest Canyon overlook. As of Friday morning, Trail Ridge Road remained open, "unless fire conditions change," the agency said.

Upper Beaver Meadows Road will be closed for air fire support operations Friday, the park said.

The Mirror Fire is burning near treeline in mostly spruce fir forest. The Forest Canyon Fire is burning in an area with lodgepole pines. The size of the Mirror Fire was first reported at one/tenth of an acre. The Forest Canyon Fire was reported at approximately 3 to 5 acres. Beetle-killed pine trees are affected in about half of both fires.

The causes of the fires have not yet been determined. However, a thunderstorm with lightning moved through the Forest Canyon area Thursday, the National Park Service said.
