AURORA, CO — An explosion Saturday morning sent three people to hospitals and left a hole in the side of an apartment building in Aurora, according to authorities.

Fire crews responded to reports of smoke at the complex in the 14500 block of East Alameda Avenue, and the explosion occurred after they arrived while they were looking for hazards, officials said. The origin of the blast was unclear, but no explosives were found when first responders searched the area, according to Aurora Fire Rescue.

Three people were taken to area hospitals and the west side of the structure suffered heavy damage, firefighters said, directing residents to evacuate the complex and stay away. Images of the scene shared on social media showed chunks of insulation on the ground and an enormous hole in the building.
