Ready To Celebrate Cinco de Mayo? The Best Events, Specials, More In Denver And Nearby

Looking for a fun way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year? Here are the best places in the Denver area to make the most of it.

DENVER, CO — Cinco de Mayo is rapidly approaching, so if you're looking for fun events and food or drink specials, you've come to the right place.

Patch gathered a collection of things you can do on Thursday here in one convenient place.

Denver

  1. For a chill Cinco de Mayo, visit bartaco for its new #bartacosecret taco —a coconut shrimp taco topped off with a Yellowbird sriracha — in partnership with Yellowbird Foods, which will be available starting on Cinco de Mayo. According to the restaurant, the new taco, which is its first-ever co-crafted #bartacosecret taco, pairs perfectly with the margaritas and will be available for dine-in, takeout or delivery and in bartaco’s taco packs.
  2. Head to the return of the Cinco de Mayo "Celebrate Culture" Festival this weekend. The famous parade is back in Denver, plus many more festivities. Check out our article all about the festival this year with all the details on price, location and more that you need to know.
  3. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a special deal, stop by Blue Agave Grill. On Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m., the restaurant will serve Blue Agave Margs, Spicy Cucumber Margs, Muy Macho Margs and Sangria Swirls for $5 and street tacos, chorizo corn dip and guacamole for $5, $7 and $9. The happy hour deals are also available the rest of the week.
  4. Bellota will offer an all-day Cinco de Mayo party with food and drink specials. There are two levels of tickets —one is free! The free tickets do not guarantee seating but allow entry. The higher level costs $35 and has two seatings, 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The paid tickets include chips and salsa, two drink tickets and a shirt. Expect frozen and mixed cocktails from Milagro tequila, a to-go frozen drink station (yum) and a DJ from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each Milagro drink donates $1.
  5. If liquid celebrations are what you seek, try the official Denver Cinco de Mayo pub crawl. The crawl includes a digital map, deals and free entry to the best Denver bars. More details here. The event is offered Thursday. If you can't make it on a weekday, another will take place Saturday.
  6. If you would rather spend Cinco de Mayo at a different bar, Jose Cuervo is still giving you a chance to get a holiday deal! Enter online to request $10 to tip your bartender, and you could receive a Venmo payment. The tequila brand is running the promotion now through the end of the day Thursday.

Around The Area

  • Celebrate Cinco de Mayo on a rooftop at a Taco and Tequila pairing event. Guests can expect three different types of tacos — each of which come with three tequila tasters — as well as churros, margaritas, great views, music and some tequila education on the side. Tickets required.
  • Prepare to entertain friends on Cinco de Mayo by attending a pre-Cinco De Mayo margarita-making class Wednesday, just in time to wow everyone on Thursday with your skills. One catch: the event at Gravity Haus is open only to members and member guests. Participants will learn how to make old and new styles of margaritas and get tips and tricks from an expert. Register here.

What It's All About

A common misconception is that the day celebrates Mexican independence. That's not the actual case.

Cinco de Mayo observes the date of the battle of Puebla in 1862, when the outnumbered Mexican army defeated the powerful French, who were occupying the area seeking unpaid debts.

A common misconception confused the holiday with Mexican Independence Day, which is Sept. 16. The country had already gained its independence from Spain years before the battle of Puebla, which was part of a war the Mexican army ultimately lost to the French.
