Colorado GOP Group Tweets 'Republicans Hate Poor People'

The group is now apologizing for the tweet that went viral last weekend.

ALAMOSA COUNTY, CO — A Colorado Republican group is receiving criticism Monday after it sent a tweet that said "Republicans hate poor people." The tweet, posted by the Alamosa County Republicans, said "Out of self-respect--be Republican."

"Democrats love poor people because they think that poor people will vote Democrat," the tweet went on to read. "Republicans hate poor people because they think the dignity of man is above being poor."

The Twitter handle has a small following with only 57 followers, but the tweet quickly went viral being shared 82 times, according to a Newsweek screenshot of the tweet.

The group quickly deleted the tweet and issued a statement on Facebook apologizing for the post.

"Hate has no home here. On behalf of the Alamosa County Republicans, and as the Chair of that organization, please accept this apology for the inappropriate and offensive post made on this site on March 30, 2018," the Facebook post said. "The author acted independently and without the concurrence of any other member of the Alamosa County Republicans."

"The regrettable post was made with the intention of condemning poverty, not persons affected by poverty, and was not meant to insult anyone," the apology went on to say. "However, that occurred, and the author sincerely regrets the post and has offered his resignation from his position with the Alamosa County Republicans, which has been accepted. Actions have consequences."
