COLORADO — Coloradans are joining millions across the country in mourning after officials confirmed that a gunman killed at least 19 children at a Texas elementary school Tuesday.

“This morning I visited Mancos Elementary School and saw the joy on the faces of students and teachers in their last week of school as they looked forward to new adventures this summer and next school year," Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement released Tuesday evening.

The children who were killed in Texas “had their joy ended forever from a cold blooded attack and their parents, friends and families won’t ever hold them in their arms again or be able to watch them grow,” Polis’ statement read. “Colorado’s hearts are heavy for our friends in Texas and join in showing love for the families and community affected.”

The 18-year-old gunman entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde with a handgun and possibly a rifle, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said.

Officials have not revealed a motive for the shooting, but Abbott identified the 18-year-old as Salvador Ramos and said he was a resident of the community that's about 85 miles west of San Antonio.

Abbott said the shooter was likely killed by officers but that the events were still being investigated.

At least one adult was also killed in the shooting, according to officials. Two officers were shot and wounded but were expected to survive, Abbott said.

A heavy police presence surrounded the school Tuesday afternoon, with officers in heavy vests diverting traffic and FBI agents coming and going from the building.

Polis ordered flags lowered in Colorado in remembrance of those who were killed in the shooting.
