Video Shows Colorado Woman Hit By Train While Inside Cop Cruiser

The Fort Lupton Police Department released body camera and dashcam video of the cruiser as it was hit by a train.

FORT LUPTON, CO— The Fort Lupton Police Department released body camera and dashcam video Friday after a woman was hit by a train while sitting handcuffed inside a police vehicle in mid-September.

The 20-year-old woman was still hospitalized as of Saturday with multiple injuries, but is expected to survive, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and news reports.

The woman was detained in a "high risk vehicle stop" around 7:40 p.m. on Sept. 16 in a road rage case, according to a news release shared by the Fort Lupton Police Department. Police left the woman in a patrol SUV alone as officers searched her truck for a weapon.

"Within a matter of seconds, the Platteville's police vehicle, which contained the female detainee, was struck by a northbound train," the news release stated.

Police called medics to the tracks, which are in the area of Highway 85 and Weld County Road 36, officials said.

CNN reported that in the video, the woman asks why she was pulled over. As the footage continues, a horn is heard before the train smashes into the cruiser— which was parked on the railroad tracks behind her truck— crushing the side and pushing the vehicle into a field. Alarmed officers can be heard calling for help.

Paul Wilkinson, an attorney for Rios-Gonzalez, told CNN that the woman sustained multiple injuries, including nine broken ribs, a broken arm, broken teeth and injuries to her head.

Bodycam footage shows police wondering aloud before the crash whether the woman might have thrown a gun out the window before being pulled over.

Later, officers confirmed that there was a gun in the center console of Rios-Gonzalez’ truck. According to the video, a bullet and holster were also retrieved from the vehicle.

The officer who parked on the railroad tracks is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the CBI, according to CNN. None of the officers involved have been identified.

Fort Lupton police said the case against the woman has been referred to the Weld County District Attorney.

According to CNN, no charges have been filed as of Saturday.
