2,700 Reports Of Street Racing In Colorado Over Past Year: CSP

Here's what drivers should do if they're caught among street racers, according to Colorado State Patrol.

COLORADO — Large street racing groups continue to gather in Colorado and slow traffic, shut down major streets and put everyone on the road in danger, Colorado State Patrol said.

Many racers speed over 100 mph, which can be terrifying for any drivers who are caught in the situation.

Colorado State Patrol's street racing website has received around 2,700 reports of racing over the past year, officials said.

Colorado State Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies released the following guidance Thursday for drivers who find themselves surrounded by street racers:

  • Stay in your vehicle and don't engage with the racers;
  • Do not try to block or impede the racers;
  • If the racers are trying to slow or block traffic, stay back or pull to the right shoulder and call 911.

Colorado State Patrol is working with many law enforcement agencies, investigators, analysts, district attorneys and city attorneys to combat street racing.

Over the summer, 829 citations were issued to street racers in Colorado, officials said.
