📰 News we're reading

1. Boulder County graduates 36 families from Family Self-Sufficiency program (dailycamera.com) — Boulder County just celebrated 36 families graduating from its Family Self-Sufficiency program, collectively earning nearly $480,000 in escrow savings while building careers and education. The HUD-funded effort, run by Boulder County Housing Authority and Boulder Housing Partners, helps low-income residents using vouchers or special apartments grow income, pay down debt, and work toward long-term independence over five years.

2. CBI to review case on death of CU Boulder student Megan Trussell (krdo.com) — State investigators will conduct an independent statutory review of the death of CU Boulder student Megan Trussell, whose body was found in rugged terrain in Boulder Canyon after she disappeared from campus last year. Triggered by Colorado’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives law, the review is supported by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, which says it stands by its original suicide ruling but welcomes added transparency.

3. City of Boulder Seeks Nature-Based Play Proposals for Children in 2026 Pilot Program (longmontleader.com) — Boulder families and youth-focused organizations can now pitch nature-based play programs for the city’s 2026 Nature Park Facilitators Pilot Program, with proposals due Feb. 1. The city is seeking small-group, hands-on activities that boost kids’ health, free play, and connection to local parks, emphasizing accessibility and community-building across ages, incomes, and abilities.

4. In Boulder County, a regional partnership moves to manage hundreds of unauthorized trails (boulderreportinglab.org) — Boulder County trail users may soon see some familiar “social” paths closed as a regional partnership tackles 350 miles of unauthorized trails across northern Colorado. Crews and new signage could appear on local open space as early as late spring, with officials deciding which informal routes to rehabilitate and which to officially adopt to protect wildlife and improve safety.

5. CU Boulder was almost built somewhere else — one reporter captured how it all began (boulderreportinglab.org) — CU’s 150th anniversary is sparking a look back at how Boulder residents fought to land the University of Colorado here instead of Denver, Colorado Springs or Greeley. This piece traces early campus struggles, Amos Bixby’s vivid reporting, and how a lone building on a barren mesa grew into today’s thriving CU Boulder campus.
