Longmont Police Correct Criminal History Of Man Shot By Officers

Several of the charges should have been attributed to the man's father of the same name.

LONGMONT, CO - The bond revocation motion for Gilly Thurby III, the Longmont man killed last week in an officer-involved shooting, contained incorrect information about his criminal history, reported the Daily Camera on Thursday.

Officers were near the Regal Cinema in the Village at the Peaks shopping center on the evening of September 20 to track Thurby, who was wanted for a felony failure to appear warrant. When he pulled a firearm from his belt, he was shot by two officers and died at the scene.

The Camera reported that Detective John Steele submitted a report about Thurby's attempt to buy a firearm on Sept. 17, a purchase in that violated his bond conditions. In that report, he cited Thurby's two pending felony sexual assault cases, but also cited three previous Weld County felony convictions from 2002 that actually belonged to his father of the same name, Gillie Thurby Jr.

"There is an error in the criminal history, but there are other issues in the three other paragraphs outlining why this person's bond should be revoked," Longmont Police Deputy Jeff Satur told the Camera.

The case remains under investigation.
