Ramsey Case: Lawsuits Seek Release Of Boulder Police Files

The $750 million legal battle between Burke Ramsey and CBS Corp could force Boulder Police to turn over thousands of pages of files.

BOULDER, CO - A defamation lawsuit against CBS Corp. could force Boulder Police to turn over thousands of pages of investigation files on the still-unsolved 1993 murder of JonBenet Ramsey. The $75 million suit was filed by Burke Ramsey, older brother of JonBenet Ramsey, after a 2016 CBS documentary suggested that he could be responsible for the death of his then six-year-old sister, reported the Daily Camera this week.

According to the Camera, the Boulder Police Department is fighting subpoenas for a large number of records associated with the case, explaining in a statement that "the Boulder Police Department has two detectives assigned and continues to work diligently to solve the crime. Disclosure of police investigative files will adversely affect the investigation." For its part, CBS cites the vast number of books published about the case–37 by the network's count–stating that few cases have garnered such widespread public attention.

Subpoenas for Boulder Police Department records come from both sides of the case, though Burke Ramsey's lawyers explained in a statement that "Burke seeks two reports, whereas the City estimates that the (CBS) subpoenas encompass thousands of documents: i.e., Defendants seek at least 100,000% more documents than Burke."
