Shoshoni Peak Rescue

Two hikers and dog take the wrong trail, require Flight for Life assistance.

BOULDER COUNTY, CO - It took a Flight for Life helicopter and an overnight technical rescue to safely get two hikers home early Sunday morning. The hikers called 911 from a satellite phone at 5:30 p.m. Saturday to report that they had attempted to climb Navajo Peak in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, but had taken the wrong trail. A Flight For Life Pilot was ultimately able to locate the men - and their canine companion - near the summit of Shoshoni Peak, according to a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff.

Shoshoni and Navajo Peak are part of a cluster of summits that can be accessed from the Brainard Lake Trailhead, and both are considered to be easy or moderate hikes when approached from the appropriate route. The area between the two summits, however, features a rock face that would be better considered the realm of technical rock climbers.

The pilot transported Rocky Mountain Rescue personnel to the saddle of Pawnee Pass, the closest safe landing area. The crew made contact with the unprepared hikers, wearing tank tops and shorts, by 10:40 p.m. After an overnight technical rescue, by 5:15 a.m. Sunday the party was back on the trail to Brainard Lake, where they arrived at 7:22 a.m.
