100 Animals Rescued In Colorado From Inhumane Treatment

The La Plata Humane Society rescued more than 100 animals after a years-long investigation into two owners.

COLORADO -- A years-long investigation into two pet owners ended last week with the seizure of more than 100 animals in Colorado. The owners, whose names were not revealed, will be charged with animal cruelty.

Travis Woehrel, director of Animal Protection for the La Plata Humane Society, said the agency received a complaint about the owners years ago from a neighbor. After a years-long investigation, the animals were seized last Wednesday.

"We've been investigating it for a few years," Woehrel told Patch. "It came to a head recently."
Woehrel said the animals, which are all in "pretty good heath," ranged from dogs, pigs, goats, horses and chickens, among other animals.

Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor in Colorado. The District Attorney's Office will determine whether additional charges will be filed, Woehrel said.

The investigation remains ongoing and it's unclear when or if the animals will be available for adoption as they remain evidence in the case, Woehrel said.
