Colorado Springs School Volunteer Sexually Assaults Girl: Police

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — A volunteer and basketball coach at a magnet school in Colorado Springs has been arrested after police said he sexually assaulted an 11 -year-old girl.

Jalen McNeal, 19, sexually abused the girl over the summer, police said. Authorities launched an investigation in October and he was arrested Feb. 3, police said Friday.

During the investigation, police learned he was an active classroom volunteer and basketball coach since December at Galileo School of Math and Science, police said.

Police said the attack did not happen at the school. The investigation remains ongoing.

Galileo is a minority-majority magnet school with about 500 students in grades 6 to 8.

Devra Ashby, head of communications for Colorado Springs School District 11, told Patch in an email all district volunteers must complete a background check before they can volunteer with students.

McNeal was told shortly after the district became aware of his arrest that he can no longer volunteer at any District 11 schools. He has not been on any of District 11 campuses since his arrest.
