COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — Authorities have identified a wanted man who was arrested on domestic violence-related charges Thursday in Colorado Springs after residents within a quarter-mile were told to shelter in place.

Andre Reed, 50, was arrested at a home Thursday afternoon on an active arrest warrant for charges including felony menacing, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Residents were told to shelter in place within a quarter-mile of Excursion and Village drives and to stay away from exterior doors and windows. Nearby French Elementary School was placed on lockout.

Around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, authorities said a suspect had been arrested, and the shelter order was lifted. French Elementary School returned to normal operations but was on a secure perimeter status due to nearby police activity, a spokeswoman for Widefield School District 3 confirmed to Patch in an email. Doors were locked, but classes continued as normal.

Sheriff's deputies learned Reed was inside the home around 11 a.m. Thursday. Deputies went to the house and confirmed he was inside. He refused to leave when they tried to take him into custody, authorities said, and they received information indicating he was heavily armed.

The address sits in a densely populated, residential area in the Security/Widefield portion of unincorporated El Paso County.

As such, a tactical team consisting of SWAT, negotiators, bomb squad and police dog units were sent to the home. After hours of failed attempts to talk with Reed, the team sent nonlethal gas munitions into the home. Reed then left the home and surrendered, authorities said.

He was booked at the El Paso County Jail for his warrant and is not facing new charges as a result of the incident.
